Educational Programs
Pediatric Tumor Board: the pediatric tumor board meets every Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. in the Christus Santa Rosa Center for Children and Families, 5th floor conference room E. Patients are presented for diagnostic review and discussion of management options. As a service to other health care providers, this forum is open to all San Antonio pediatric specialists dealing with children's cancer. For more information, contact Dr. Shafqat Shah. The 1st Wednesday of the month Bone Marrow Transplant cases are presented. The 2nd Wednesday is Leukemia/Lymphoma. The 3rd Wednesday is Ortho Oncology. The 4th Wednesday is Surgical Oncology. And, in the occurrence of a 5th Wednesday, Neuro Oncology cases are presented.
Pediatric Hematology Conference: On the 3rd Thursday of each month, topics in pediatric hematology are presented at 12:00 p.m. in Christus Santa Rosa Center for Children and Families, 5th floor auditorium. For more information, contact Dr. Howard Britton.
Learning Resources: A teaching and learning resources room is located in the outpatient clinic on the 8th floor of Santa Rosa Children's Hospital. This room is open during regular clinic hours to students, residents, staff and their guests. The room contains: up-to-date editions of some of the major textbooks in the fields of pediatric hematology, oncology, immunology and bone marrow transplantation; additional printed teaching material; slide atlases, case studies and textbooks on CD-ROM; multi-head teaching microscope for viewing slides of patient bone marrow and peripheral blood smears.
Senior electives: An approved senior selective for fourth year medical students is offered, catalog number PEDI 4013. Students participate in inpatient service and outpatient clinics in hematology, oncology, and immunology. Emphasis is placed on acquiring and enhancing skills needed in the diagnostic evaluation, therapy and follow-up of these subspecialty patients.
Research Electives: Interested medical students and residents are encouraged to contact individual faculty regarding specialized research electives. Currently active research programs include clinical research in oncology, hemophilia, sickle cell disease, and pediatric hospice and palliative care. Active basic and translational research programs include oncology drug discovery and pharmacokinetics, autoimmunity and immunotherapy and the development of the immune system.
