Holiday card project raises funds for free books for needy children

Holiday cards featuring children’s unique artwork are on sale again through the Reach Out and Read program at the Health Science Center.  A box of 20 cards is $10 and you can choose from 10 different designs.  Proceeds from the card sales will be used to purchase new children’s books for the Reach Out and Read program at the Health Science Center.
Reach Out and Read is a national, nonprofit program that strives to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading.  At every well-child check-up between ages 6 months and 5 years, children who come to our clinics receive a beautiful, new book to take home and keep.  Through Reach Out and Read, children start school with a home library of 10 beautiful children’s books and their parents understand that reading aloud is the most important thing they can do to prepare their children for school.  Reach Out and Read is offered through two programs in the Department of Pediatrics at the Health Science Center.  The first, the Children’s Health Center, is the training clinic for the pediatric residents and provides primary care to a large population of low-income families.  The second, the PREMIEre program, is run by the division of neonatology and provides comprehensive follow-up care for premature infants.  These programs distribute about 4,000 new books per year to children in San Antonio. For more information about Reach Out and Read, visit www.reachoutandread.org <http://www.reachoutandread.org/> .
The holiday card project was made possible by a generous grant from the Semp Russ Fund of the San Antonio Area Foundation.  The cards were designed by children, may of whom were patients at Christus Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital and University Hospital.  They come in packages of 20 identical cards with plain white envelopes.  Ordering cards is simple. Just send your order and check made out to the UT Health Science Center through campus mail to Dr. Rebecca Huston, Department of Pediatrics.  Please do not include shipping since the cards will be sent back through campus mail.  The cards are available now through the end of the year.  The holiday card brochure can be accessed at: http://www.pediatrics.uthscsa.edu/generalpeds/reachout.pdf.  For more information, contact Dr. Rebecca Huston, clinical professor of pediatrics, HustonR@uthscsa.edu or 210-562-5344.
