Department receives $1.8 million over five years for teaching grant

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has awarded the UT Health Science Center's Department of Pediatrics' Residency Program its maximum funding amount of $1.8 million over five years for a program teaching early intervention techniques to use with patients at risk for substance abuse. The grant, led by Dr. Janet Williams in the Division of General Pediatrics, will fund the training for 539 residents in these skills.

SAMHSA awarded $66 million over the next five years for 15 cooperative agreements to provide communities expanded capacity to identify individuals with substance abuse problems and intervene appropriately. The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio was the only program in Texas selected.
